AFTERNOON WITH WEBER, PROKOFIEV AND BRAHMS
April 2, 2013 by IPS · Leave a Comment
The Hibernian Orchestra, conducted by John Finucane, presents a captivating programme of works opening with Weber’s Overture to Der Freischütz. Der Freischütz became a worldwide smash hit overnight, and, although the opera is rarely performed, the Overture remains one Weber’s most popular orchestral works. The programme continues with Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 where the orchestra is delighted to be joined by guest soloist Lidia Jewloszewicz-Clarke, winner of the 2012 Hibernian Orchestra Concerto Competition. Written while Prokofiev was on tour and just before he returned to Russia, this work was commissioned by the French violinist Robert Soetens, who premiered the piece in Madrid in 1935. The concert shall draw to a defiant end with Brahm’s Symphony No. 4, widely regarded as the composer’s most intellectually taut and ingenious symphony.
