ART EXHIBITION of POLISH & IRISH ARTISTS in DUBLIN

This year the IPS Annual Exhibition is open to the public from the 14th of September and will open late on Dublin Culture Night on the 21st. (from 5pm to 9pm)

This is an opportunity to see the latest work by the Polish artist Andzrej Mazur, not often seen in Dublin exhibitions. Mazur interrogates the nature of humanity, his work being further informed by his voluntary activities with the homeless. He says ‘I have seen at close quarters the havoc that has been wreaked by the demise of the Celtic Tiger. Many are destitute fellow countrymen, each day brings their stories of despair lightened by small increments of hope’. His etchings and oils are a delicate blend of the surreal and the accurate, reflecting the dichotomy between our observed realities and our inner selves.

Exhibiting artists include newcomers to the show Mandy Brennan (oils) and Katarzyna Wojcikowska (mixed media).  This year Camilla Fanning is exhibiting watercolours for the first time, Helena Johnston shows her most recent oils from Provence, and Orla Kaminska is showing her latest works, in porcelain, since completing a major commission for Portrush. Also exhibiting are Deirdre O Broin Lennon (oil), Ula Retzlaff (oil), Martin Reynolds (pencil), and Maciej Smoleński (oil) and Marysia Harasimowicz-Harris (Mixed Media).

On the Culture Night the Polish House will be hosting a free musical event featuring the Brazilian pianist Rafael Calesso Urbanovicz who plays Mozart, Clementi, the Brazilian composer Nazareth and a Bach Fugue, and is a further opportunity to view the exhibition.

This is an exhibition which brings together two cultures and offers a unique opportunity to see Polish and Irish art displayed together. The exhibition is an important part of the work of the Irish Polish Society which encourages intercultural activities running a variety of family and cultural events throughout the year.

The Irish Polish Society
The Irish Polish Society is the main organisation in Ireland for Polish people who want to learn about Ireland and for Irish people who are interested in Poland. The IPS has been in existence since 1979 when Pope Paul 11 came to Ireland

The IPS organises a wide range of cultural and social events to suit different age groups, including Art Exhibitions, illustrative talks given by Art Galleries, art/craft workshops, musical evenings, poetry and literature readings, film shows, talk by local and visiting speakers, barbecues and outings, including trips to Poland.  The IPS celebrates the main cultural and religious festivals of each country and encourages integration through a range of activities including inviting speakers to the society.

The IPS has taken part in exhibitions on Solidarity in the European Union House and held seminars on Polish history and politics in the Polish House at 20 Fitzwilliam Place. Recent events have included a Family Easter Egg painting workshop, a quiz, a performance of Polish poetry and an exhibition on Liberatura – a display of experimental books. We have co-operated with the Irish Writers Centre in a Bloomsday presentation on the translation of Finnegans Wake by James Joyce into Polish.
