Saturday,16th June, 6 pm – Bloomsday – in the Irish Writers’ Centre (19 Parnell Square, Dublin 1).
A celebration of Joyce’s Finnegans Wake with Krzysztof Bartnicki. The event is organized by IPS in cooperation with the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is financially supported by the Polish Embassy.
Krzysztof Bartnicki is a translator and lexicographer. His Polish language translation of Finnegans Wake was recently published in Poland. (It took him some 10 years to translate this Joyce’s masterpiece!).
The book, which is a challenge – “Finneganów Train”
16 June in Irish Writers’ Centre Dublin was the first full promotion of the Polish translation of James Joyce’s book titled “Finneganów tren” (Eng. Finnegans Wake).
Difficult task of translating the work undertaken by Christopher Bartnicki (linguist, translator and co-author of many dictionaries, the author of “Prospectus”). As he himself admits – the earlier the Polish translation of Maciej Slomczynski is beautiful, but its faithful to the original.
“Finnegans Wake” is perhaps the most remarkable book in the world, and certainly the most remarkable book of James Joyce – says Katarzyna Bazarnik, the editor of a series of corporate liberature Ha! Art – is a 628-page work written language, consisting of many languages in the world, based on of English.
The book interweaves many elements – words, languages, images, and the reader can move from one end of the book to its beginning. The work also contains many neologisms, which the translator is an extremely difficult task.
The translator must face the challenge of multilingualism, try to give the work in the Polish language in such a way as to preserve the richness of the original, but also try to give images, allusions, and characters that emerge from this strange language – added Katarzyna Bazarnik.
The author of the Polish edition, Christopher Bartnicki, the first Pole, has translated the whole song. He started his career in 1999, in 2009 ended the translation, the years passed on editing and writing books. Was shown by the corporation Ha! Art in Krakow, in a unique on 29 February 2012. Its appearance accurately reflects the original.
The book can be purchased over the internet, it costs about 100 zł.
